Horatio Alger Association and Honeywell Award 10 Outstanding Students Scholarships to Pursue STEM Education
Honeywell Scholarship program, in its second year, invests more than $200,000 as part of a more than $1 million five-year commitment to the next generation of STEM leaders
WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 29, 2015) – Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced 10 students as recipients of its Honeywell Scholarship. Honeywell, a Fortune 100 diversified technology and manufacturing leader, wholly funds the scholarship program through Honeywell Hometown Solutions, its corporate citizenship initiative. The program, established in 2014, annually awards 10 scholarships in the amount of $10,000 to Horatio Alger Scholars pursuing a college degree in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM). Honeywell also offers five to seven students an internship experience at the company available exclusively to Horatio Alger Scholars. The Honeywell program complements the Association’s existing National and State Scholarships Programs, which total more than $10 million this year.
The Horatio Alger Honeywell Scholarship Program was initially created in 2014 for first-year students enrolled at Honeywell Partner schools or Horatio Alger Collegiate Partner schools, listed below, who are pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering or math. The program encourages young men and women to follow their passion in these fields with the goal of creating future industry leaders. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and must exhibit good character and academic promise despite facing significant personal adversity. Funding will cover expenses, such as tuition and on-campus room and board, which recipients can begin to use during their sophomore year.
“Since my induction as a Member in Horatio Alger Association in 2014, I have been continually impressed with the organization’s commitment to improving the lives of promising young people,” said Dave Cote, Honeywell Chairman and CEO. “Now, in our second year of the Horatio Alger Honeywell Scholarship Program, we’ve seen first-hand the impact that scholarships and internship opportunities have on these students. Their work ethic and determination to succeed is unmatched, and I look forward to witnessing all that they will accomplish. I am proud to support the Horatio Alger Honeywell Scholars as they continue to pursue STEM careers.”
In addition to the 10 recipients of the Honeywell Scholarship, Horatio Alger Association also announced seven students who have been selected for Honeywell’s summer internship program. The program, also launched last year, annually selects Horatio Alger Scholars who are entering their senior year of study to participate in a prestigious internship at various Honeywell locations across the country. Internship assignments range from cross-business projects and individual research assignments to design and innovation development. Honeywell has set a goal to convert 60 percent of these interns into full-time employees.
“My fellow Members and I could not be more thankful for Dave Cote’s support of the Association and our Scholars,” said David Sokol, chairman, Horatio Alger Association. “Developing future leaders in STEM fields is vastly important to remaining globally competitive, especially as technology continues to advance. It is our belief that students with the passion and the drive to pursue these types of careers should not be deterred simply because of the rising costs of a college degree. Through the generosity of Honeywell and this unique program, we are proud to assist young people on their road to success.”
