花言巧语 – Flattery and sweet talk
Today’s chengyu is: 花言巧语 (huā yán qiǎo yǔ)
花 huā – flower (fig. “flowery”)
言 yán – speech, words
巧 qiǎo – crafty, cunning (this meaning is mainly used in this idiom; normally we hear 巧 in the phrase 这么巧!- What a coincidence!)
语 yǔ – language
In English it translates as “smooth talk”, “sweet words”, with a negative meaning.
The Chinese explanation is: 花言巧语,伪装成朋友的凶恶敌人。 Freely translated: “When a vicious enemy disguises himself as a friend through sweet words and gains trust”).
By the way: 巧语 – flattering, ingratiating words
And another chengyu with a similar meaning and structure: 甜言蜜语 (tián yán mì yǔ) – “honeyed words”, “syrupy speech”.
